A complete beginner’s guide to using flash for portrait photography

Using flash for portrait photography is something that scares off a lot of photographers, but once you master it, you’ll wonder how you ever worked without the full creative and technical control it offers. If you’re just starting out and aren’t sure how to get started, check out this incredibly comprehensive video tutorial that covers everything from different types of flash to using TTL and complex multi-light setups.

Come to you from Ed Verosky, this awesome video tutorial will show you everything you need to know to start working with flash for your portrait photography. By far the most important advice I would give to budding strobe users is to keep it simple at first. Many people try to get started with using complex multi-light setups from the start and end up getting overwhelmed trying to confuse them all simultaneously before mastering the fundamentals of light properties and behaviors. And don’t worry, you can still create high-quality images using just one light; professionals do it all the time, in fact. Once you’ve mastered this, you’ll feel much more comfortable transitioning to using two and three lights. Watch the video above for Verosky’s full recap.
