This year’s London Games Festival held a virtual photo challenge, and the winner was a stunning screenshot from Red Dead Redemption 2.
Almost four years after its release, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 always manages to win awards of all kinds. At this year’s London Games Festival, a fan with an artistic eye was awarded Virtual Photographer of the Year, as part of Nvidia Studio’s Virtual Photo Challenge, thanks to a very beautiful composition Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot.
Since 2016, the London Games Festival has been an annual celebration of the gaming medium with multiple events such as the EGX Expo and the BAFTA Game Awards, with events taking place from April 1 to April 10. One of the festival’s most exciting events is the Virtual Photo Challenge which receives submissions from around the world via social media. The London Games Festival proudly displays the most prestigious photographs of London’s Trafalgar Square. Photographs submitted this year included games such as Ghostwire: Tokyo, NieR Automata, Ghost of Tsushima, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
The winner of Virtual Photographer of the Year was announced on April 7, with the grand prize being a GeForce 3080 Ti-powered studio laptop to empower budding artists. This year’s winning submission, which you will find below, comes from virtual photographer Joe Meizies for his Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot of a lone cowboy on horseback at sunset. The photograph features excellent composition, color and excellent use of lighting. Undoubtedly, all were taken into account in the jury’s decision to reward Meizies for his work. Meizies also submitted an impressive screenshot of Lara Croft from the grave robber series, which also managed to be part of the discussion for the best screenshot. All submissions are in a Google Drive folder which can be found here.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely praised for its beautiful landscapes, highly detailed world design, and masterful use of built-in lighting, all of which are on full display with this excellent screenshot. Even as Rockstar’s award-winning cowboy drama nears its fourth anniversary, fans are still capturing Red Dead Redemption 2the beauty of either through in-game screenshots or fan-created artwork. Joe Meizies’ recent win at the London Game Awards is fitting, given the huge fan base still swept away by red death 2breathtaking panoramas.
Although Red Dead Redemption 2 was the winning screenshot for Virtual Photographer of the Year, this year’s competition was tough. The submissions included a variety of games with older titles like Batman: Arkham Knight standing face to face with Ghost of Tsushima, a game that deserves a screenshot at every turn. Modern video game graphics have long looked great, and in a time when so many games look great, art direction and design are where games make their mark. The Virtual Photographer of the Year contest perfectly highlights the hard work that went into making these games look so good in the first place. The London Games Festival Virtual Photo Challenge will be back in 2023.
